Downtown Charleston is the most dynamic city. I have lived here for over 20 years and still, I am constantly surprised by all the places I did not know existed. Recently, I was driving down Rutledge Street and came across Bogarden. This public garden is located on the corner of Rutledge and Bogard Streets. There has always been an empty lot on this corner, but in 2010 the space was transformed into a beautiful garden. The garden is open to the community and anyone can help plant, water, weed, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Consisting of a handful of raised beds, pots, and a community compost pile, this garden is in full bloom! Lots of lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, and flowers to cut are planted and ready to pick. The watering system for the urban farm is a series of rain barrels. What an inspiring concept! Hopefully we will see more of these gardens sprouting up around town. For more information on Bogarden, email them at thebogarden@gmail.com.
